Football by its nature is a fierce and competitive sport.
In the last 20 years we have seen a dramatic rise in the
year end statistics of both Placekickers and Punters.
Several factors have contributed to the on field success
of these "Specialists". By today's standards the kicker
and punter are far more athletic than in years past.
Often times they excel at other positions on their team
as well as being multiple sport athletes at their school.
Kicker specific training has been adopted at all levels
in the quest to be the best you can be. While virtually
non existent in the past the personal kicking coach has
become a staple for many high school kickers and
punters looking to hone their skills and compete at the
Kickers and punters do not train in the same fashion
as the wide receiver or defensive lineman, either on
or off the field. Their craft requires sound mechanics
practiced in a repetitive format to build the confidence
needed to perform on game day.
Basic fundamentals are taught through a variety of
drills and exercises to enforce the "Muscle Memory"
connection whereas the athlete simply performs their
skill without significant thought. Video review is also
available to analyze each fragment of the kickers
technique in order to detect small inconsistencies not
detected by the naked eye. Precise evaluation of video
post lesson affords kicker and parent an opportunity
to examine the performance of the athlete and allows
the coach to address the specific tendencies of each
specialist while suggesting ways in which to improve.
